I’ve just posted a video of the “Free Falling” parody I sing when I speak to student groups.
This was recorded in front of 600 college students here in DC this past January. Since it was a college crowd, I added a more “edgy” third verse–I don’t include it when I perform for high schoolers.
The song is basically a bunch of references to stories that I tell in my speeches. Here are links to videos of all these stories:
- “Eye contact at the urinal, this guy was hardcore…” Social Interaction at Urinals
- “She was in my math class…” Prosthesis Malfunction on My Golf Course Date
- “We woke the bull…” Cow tipping story, on How to turn your limp into a pimp walk
- “The two liter…” Movie theater story, on How to turn your limp into a pimp walk
- “In the airport security line…” In the 4th chapter of Laughing at Our Differences

Thanks, everyone, for all these incredibly kind comments!! Wow!!
Zack, I came up with the idea for the song three or four years ago. I was learning guitar. Originally I wanted to do a parody of Ashley Simpson’s “Piece of Me,” (I was gonna do it also about my artificial leg malfunctioning…it would be called “Piece of Junk”) but it was just too hard to play on guitar.
Then I realized Free Fallin is the easiest song ever to play on guitar. Just three chords. So so easy. And then I wrote the song.
Over the years I’ve added the stanzas about the two liter, the urinal story, etc, as I’ve added those stories to my speech.

Josh,
Wow! I was at the Student Council Confrence in Ames today and all i can say really is wow..you had me laughing, crying , and laughing some more. It was great. You really had an impact on me. I went in to that auditorium with alot of weight on my shoulders and alot of things i was feeling sorry for myself about. Just alot of stuff from my past. And i can honestly say, after i walked out of there…I felt like a stronger person. That I really will make it. No matter how hard it gets. Im honored to tell you that you are now my hero. Keep doing what your doing!Your truely amazing.

Hey i loved your songfree falling this version is even funnier than the one you did at school i saw you at Antietam high school earlier this week you were by far the bestassembly we have had. Also right after school i had a great idea me and some friends should ride through a wendys drive through on our bike butit was to cold to go anywhere on bikes. I think smoke on the water is easier to play on the guitar tough. I hope you come again next year.
